With controversies still trailing the appointment of Finidi George as the new coach of the Super eagles, former Nigerian international Benedict Akwuegbu, has called for total support for the current Enyimba Gaffer.
Akwuegbu, who played for Nigeria between the year 2000-2005 stated this in an exclusive interview on one of Africa’s longest running independent Sports program on Television, Sportsville on Channels TV. The former RC Lens forward said Finidi has the ability to deliver with the eagles if given all it requires to succeed on the job.

In his words: “Finidi’s experience as an ex-international will come handy now that he’s in charge of the team, let’s not forget he has been part of the entire set-up in the last twenty months and he knows the strength of the team “.
” every coach is as good as the support they get from their employers, i will urge the NFF to give Finidi the free hand to pick his team and provide a suitable working environment for him to operate”.
On the quality of assistant coaches to work with Finidi, Akwuegbu believes Emmanuel Amuneke who also applied for the eagles job will form a good partnership with the former Ajax winger.
” both coaches are still best of friends despite all that has been said in the last few weeks, i know Finidi and Amuneke are very close from our days in the National team were they share rooms in camp, let’s not blow this out of proportion, these guys can still work together for the benefit of our football”.
Akwuegbu further urge Finidi to bring back the wing play that saw the eagles excel in the 90s as the current team is still lack an identity in terms of playing pattern.
” finidi made his name playing under Clemens Westerhof as a winger, that was the glory day’s of the Super eagles with a well articulated playing style, we can strive with the wing play under finidi because he has the players to make this happen”.
Finidi’s first competitive game as Eagles manager will be the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa on June 3rd in Uyo.
