Insurance Football Club of Benin defeated stubborn Ikorodu City FC of Lagos 2-0 and sealed promotion to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL )

 

 

The Benin Arsenal have just returned to the premier League with two matches to spare.

 

They gained promotion in 2018/2019 season with same coach Monday Odigie in charge but could not sustain their stay.

 

 

The week 20 game of the Nigeria National League (NNL) saw super substitute Deputy Echeta breaking the deadlock for Insurance FC in the 53rd minute of the game with a header,following a goal mouth scramble before Imade Osarenkhoe sealed the victory in the 68th minute when he confidently converted a spot kick to make it two unreplied goals for the Benin Arsenals.

 

 

The first half had ended goalless in the game that attracted a good number of spectators,including top government functionaries most of whom did not want the Lagos boys to spoil Insurance victory party.

 

 

The 2-0 victory against Ikorodu City was just icing on the cake for Insurance who were already sure of the promotion ticket before kickoff after their closest challengers Gateway Utd had lost 3-1 to Vandrezzer FC in Lagos about six hours before the Benin fixture kickoff time.

 

 

Insurance who already established seven points lead at the top of group B1 table against second placed Gateway Utd before their 6pm fixture have now extended the lead by 10 points with the sole promotion ticket from the southern conference group B1 confirmed.

 

Insurance FC with 46 points in their bag are guests to J.Atete FC in their next game before coming back home to host Vandrezzer FC next week in their last game of the regular season.

 

In a post match interview, the chairman of the club and Deputy Governor of Edo state Rt Hon Comrade Philip Shaibu commended the Insurance players, coaches and management for a well done job. He attributed the impressive run and success of the team this season to hardwork and teamplay.

 

The Deputy Governor assured the team of continuous support to ensure good outings and sustainability in the premier League.

 

Also speaking, the chairman,Edo state sports Commission Yussuf Alli and Insurance coordinator Mrs Sabina Chikere expressed joy over the victory against Ikorodu City and the promotion of the team as they both expressed gratitude to the state government.

 

 

The Technical Director of Bendel Insurance coach Monday Odigie on his part ascribed the team’s success to Edo state government, particularly the Deputy Governor who has been a source of inspiration for the Club. He also gave kudos to the management and his players who got the job done with two games to spare.
