Super Falcons and Atletico Madrid star Rasheedat Ajibade has declared that the desire of the women’s senior national team is to secure a tenth WAFCON title as they face host Morocco in a testy semi-final clash on Monday night.
The light-skin winger who got the team’s only but crucial goal against Cameroon in the quarter-final, said they are more focused that ever to achieve their second target of winning the trophy after a 2023 World Cup ticket was secured last Thursday.
The most decorated women’s team in Africa who stumbled in the first game against South Africa have since gone ahead to win three games in a row and racked up a total of seven goals in the process.
Their opponents, Morocco have also put up some decent performances buoyed by their supportive home fans and an experienced coach in former France International Reynald Pedros.
Pedros, who guided French club Olympics Lyon to the women’s Champions League successes in 2018 and 2019, has helped the Moroccans to reach their first semi-final at the WAFCON.
But reinforcing the Super Falcons’ resolve in winning the title, ‘the Blue haired’ lady declared that they are ready to qualify for the final and defend their title successfully.
“It doesn’t matter who we are playing against” she said, “our goal is to retain out title in this championship, we have to take each match as they come. It doesn’t matter who we are playing against. We just have to take one match after the other to achieve our goal.”
Nigeria will head into this encounter with rich experience of facing off against their host at the WAFCON as well as at other competitions.
In 2010, the Super Falcons endured a hostile atmosphere to defeat their host South Africa and lift the trophy.
They also subdued host Cameroon in the 2016 enroute to their 8th title.
Recently, the Falcons were visitors of the USA and the Canada national teams where they played in full capacity Stadia.
