Remo Stars and Enyimba qualified for the season ending Super Six tournament after they picked up positive results on the final day of the regular 2023 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season.

Remo needed a win on the final day to secure a top three finish and Daniel Ogunmodede’s side made sure of their place in the postseason with a 4-0 thumping of Kwara United in Ikenne which clinched second spot in Group A.

Enyimba, meanwhile, got the point they needed to book their spot by holding hosts Shooting Stars to a goalless draw in Ibadan. The Aba side end the regular season in third place.

Both teams join leaders Bendel Insurance as Super Six representatives from Group A.

Insurance, who had already booked their place before matchday 18, ended the season in historic fashion as their 1-1 draw at relegated Nasarawa United meant they are the first Nigerian side to go through a topflight season without losing a match.

In Group B, a three way battle for the final Super Six spot was won by Sunshine Stars who started the day in fourth but ended it in third after dispatching already relegated Dakkada United 2-0 in Akure.

Their closest challengers Abia Warriors and Doma United faced off in Umuahia with Warriors triumphing 2-0 to kill off Doma’s chances. Abia Warriors finished level on 27 points with Sunshine Stars, but, their inferior goals difference saw them agonisingly miss out on a place in the postseason.

Bayelsa United, meanwhile, ensured their topflight status for another season with a 2-0 victory against Niger Tornadoes in Yenagoa. The win ensured Wikki Tourists were relegated despite an impressive 2-0 win at Lobi Stars.
